Quick Information

Campus Profile:   NTNU

NTNU Mandarin Training Center, a subsidiary of National Taiwan Normal University, was founded in the autumn of 1956 for teaching Chinese as a second language. Currently, MTC is the largest and the most renowned Chinese language center, with around 1,700 students from more than 70 countries enrolled each academic quarter(three months.)

MTC students come from different culture and language backgrounds. They share the common goal of learning to communicate in Chinese effectively--some for employment; some for interests in Chinese culture and history. Many students have never learned Chinese before they enroll in MTC. Some start from intermediate and advanced level. No matter your motive for learning Chinese or the level of your Chinese, MTC will do all it can to help you make rapid progress.

Accomodations and Meals

Accommodations options for the NTNU program are of full range. Students can choose from standard housing programs, shared housing, and première housing programs. Meal plans are not available, however there are on campus cafeterias as well as a wide variety of restaurants in the surrounding area for students to dine. Travel + Cultural Exchange

MTSA programs bring students more than just the classroom experience. Students will engage in many cultural activities to help build an understanding of Taiwanese and Chinese culture, practice their language skills in real-life situations, and build connections and friendships with local Taiwanese.

Language Exchange Nights

MTSA holds Language Exchange Nights for students to get together, meet new local friends, enjoy food and drinks, and practice their language skills in a real life situation. MTSA L.E. Nights give students the opportunity to get in touch with real Taiwanese culture and use language to learn and communicate with native speakers.

Weekend Cultural Trips

MTSA weekend cultural trips bring students to many unique spots in and around Taipei. Trips range from cultural hotspots such as the famous National Palace Museum to beautiful natural environments such as the nearby WuLai Aboriginal Village.

Semester Adventure

MTSA Semester Adventures are unique every semester. Students will head out on a 3 day trip to explore some of Taiwans natural beauty and learn about the islands history. Semester Adventures involve activities such as hiking, snorkeling, BBQ's, and river tracing. The Semester Adventure is the chance to get student out to experience the natural beauty Taiwan offers and deliver them some historical and cultural knowledge of the past at the same time.

The Mandarin Mentor program is designed to help students get help with any trouble their having while in Taiwan as well as boost their Mandarin skills. Each student is pair up with an MTSA local Taiwanese student to act as their Mandarin Mentor. Students meet once a week with their Mentor in a 1-on-1 session for private tutoring to help them work through any areas or assignments they may need more assistance with.

Classes are group classes with maximum class sizes of 10 students. Typically, more advanced classes tend to have lower enrollment rates and beginning classes higher. Students will attend a total of 15 hours of class each week, or 3 hours of class per day.

Class Descriptions

General language class students attend classes for 15 hours a week:

(1)Regular class:small language class for 10 hours a week and supplementary language class for 5 hours a week. These classes normally have around 6 - 10 people in them and move at a steady pace.

10 hours are in class Mandarin instruction with course materials. The remaining 5 hours are spent in classes such as pronunciation, calligraphy, or culture classes, totaling 15 hours per week between the two.
